Dermatoscopy is an innovative book applicable to both beginners and experienced dermatoscopists alike, since it encourages all readers to 'start from the beginning'. It was originally published in German by Harald Kittler, a dermatologist and dermatopathologist at the Medical University of Vienna. In preparing an English language version Harald enlisted the assistance of two Australian colleagues, Cliff Rosendahl and Alan Cameron, and and M.D./Ph.D. student from Vienna, Philipp Tschandl.
Cliff and Alan, because of the geographic location of their practices have exposure to types of lesions less common in Europe including lentiginous melanomas, lichen planus-like keratosis, actinic keratosis, pigmented Bowen's disease and squamous cell carcinoma. They were able to contribute a large number of dermatoscopic images for these and other conditions as well as substantially writing new sections for the book on 'Chaos and Clues' and 'Clues and Cliches'.
'Dermatoscopy' is an original work which rebuilds the algorithmic method of dermatoscopy from the firm foundations of classic pattern analysis. Poorly defined and confusing metaphorical language is swept away and replaced by crisp scientifically defined geometric terminology. The method is presented in a logical progressive manner with hundreds of high resolution dermatoscopic images. Dermatoscopic-histologic correlation is a theme throughout the book. The reader is encouraged to use knowledge of dermatoscopy to build a mental image of the anticipated dermatopathology leading to a provisional histologic diagnosis.
